What to know before choosing a storage option for your belongings

New Post

Sometimes moving house isn’t as straightforward as going from one place to another on the same day. Delays with settlement, a sudden change of circumstances, or timing issues can mean your new home isn’t quite ready when you need to move out of your old one.

When things are up in the air, the last thing you want to worry about is what to do with your household items. Moving is daunting enough as it is – moving twice even more so.

And then there’s the worry about your belongings. You want to know that they’re safely stored and won’t get damaged before you move them into your new home.

If you find yourself in this situation, you’ll likely be faced with two main options: self-storage or removalist storage. While there are pros and cons to both, here are the main things to consider.

Short-term or long-term storage

The first thing to consider is how long you’ll need to store your items. Short-term storage means anywhere from a few days to a couple of months. Generally, you’d use short-term storage if your moving dates don’t quite match up or you need to move things out while renovating your home.

The benefit of short-term storage is the flexibility – you can pay by the week or month, and cancel anytime with just a bit of notice. It also tends to offer faster access to your belongings – as soon as you’re ready to move, you can arrange your items to come with you;

Long-term storage is for when you need storage for a few months, or even years. In exchange for locking in a longer term, you may pay a little less than if you were to go month-to-month. But if you do need access to your belongings, you may have to provide a bit more notice to move them out of storage.

Self-storage or combined removal

While self-storage options are readily available, there are a lot of benefits to combining your removal and storage services into one.

First, having your removalists store your belongings gives you one point of contact for the whole time. You don’t have to worry about coordinating different companies, or ringing around. You can get one quote for the whole move and storage.

The other benefit is having your items under the same duty of care. Choosing a company with a long-standing reputation means you know they’ll take the same care of your belongings stored under their roof as they do when moving straight from one house to another.

If you do choose to use self-storage, make sure you consider how you’ll get your belongings into and out of storage. Accessibility in some self-storage facilities can be difficult. You might not be able to back a truck or car close to your storage unit, meaning multiple trips to get your goods in and out.

However, there are benefits to using self-storage – particularly for a small quantity of belongings or a shorter-term. Most storage places offer 24/7 access, so you can move in and out at any time. Using self-storage can also be helpful if you’re needing to downsize and just want somewhere to sort through your belongings before donating or selling.

Packing for storage

Extra care should be taken when you know your belongings will be going into storage, even just for a short amount of time. Consider that going from your home to storage and onto your new home means a lot of jostling about, so pack accordingly. You may want to use extra protection to prevent any damage.

Boxes should be securely taped both top and bottom to prevent dust from getting in. Make sure anything going into storage is clean and dry. Vacuum seal bags are ideal for clothing and linen as they prevent bugs and moisture from getting in.

While second-hand boxes are fine for a standard move, try to use new boxes for storage as they are going to be more sturdy. If you can, use boxes of the same size so that you can easily stack them beside and on top of each other. This will also allow you to make the most of your space.

No matter how long you’re storing your belongings, you want to make sure that they’ll be protected from the elements. Make sure that your goods are covered to protect them from dust, moisture and unwanted critters.
