How do you determine which storage system is best for you?
Choosing the right storage for you depends on what your expectations are. Aside from the cost, you also have to decide what would be most convenient for you.
How much storage space do you need? Do you want to be able to access your belongings 24/7? How far are you willing to drive to access your goods? How long do you plan to rent out a storage unit? These are just some of the questions you need to ask when choosing a storage system.
Most removalist companies offer storage of one kind or another to their customers. They either have their own warehouse or will offer to take your belongings to a self storage unit, like we do.
There are three main types of storages that you can choose from. We’ve already mentioned warehouse and self-storage, and the third is a “container” or “portable” unit.
Storing your goods at a warehouse is often most practical for long-term stays simply because it is generally cheaper.
The problem with warehouse storage is that you have limited access to your goods because they will be stored side by side with other clients’ belongings. So make sure that you don’t need to get to them often if you’re putting them in a warehouse.
Another thing to consider about warehouses is that they usually do not have any climate control services which makes it unsuitable for musical instruments and other things that can be affected by humidity.
Ask your storage company if they have climate control service if you need one.
Self Storage Unit
Self storage units are best for those who need to be able to access their goods 24/7 but do not mind driving the distance to get to them.
The storage company will give you a key or code for you to access your belongings and it’s usually free to access them any time, but always read their guidelines and check for restriction clauses and special fees.
Self storage units sometimes have a climate control system that protects your goods from mould and mildew. This is best for storing paper files and other climate-sensitive items.
Portable containers are good for both long-term and short-term storage.
Most removalists would recommend portable containers to their clients because it’s best for moving. They can pick up the containers and transfer them to your new location or bring them to a facility.
You need to clarify with your storage company how much access you can have if you need to be able to get to your goods often. Some storage companies let you keep your portable containers within your property.
